I spent many hours creating a life sized pyrography image of an 1873 Winchester, thinking it would make an impressive piece above a fireplace mantle or cottage wall.
When I received a request to enter some of my work in a national woodcarving/pyrography competition I realized I didn't have a competition-worthy piece to enter, but I did have a potential statement piece that reflected the feelings of many north American citizens.
I realized that glorifying a weapon that was designed for the sole purpose of killing more effectively was not what I should be promoting.
I decided that if I was going to remove the image entirely and replace it with a tranquil wildlife scene, I could present a visual message to the visitors attending the competition.
I sanded off a portion of the rifle and burned in the words.. If Only it was This Easy.
I also glued the sanding block to the wood to clarify the statement.
Winning second place meant nothing compared to the hundreds of visitors that photographed the piece and commented on the strong message that they were taking away with them.

Pine pyrography for a Northern Ontario cottage lot. The owner's pet dog who had passed away was included in the hunting and fishing theme of the sign.

My version of a 31.5 inch diameter, 1 inch thick solid wood Viking shield. Dragon is relief carved and woodburned. Outer edge finished in leather with solid oak grip hidden behind the hammered metal boss.

My first crop of Swan, Martin and Bushel gourds grown in 2015 and left in the garden to age over the winter.
They're finally dry and ready to be brought back to life with pyrography.

This piece was recently entered in an annual Wood Carving and Pyrography competition held in Waterloo Ontario where it won a 1st place ribbon and a Best in Level award.

Recycled old metal clock with As Time Goes By piano music score sheet in clock face, custom oak framework mounted on back of clock which holds the surrounding piano keys salvaged from an early 1920's Amherst Nova Scotia piano to indicate the hours.
54 inches in diameter.
This clock has an amazing story behind it.

Picture is matted with rusted sheet steel plate and framed with steel studded scorched lumber. approx. 20 inches wide.

A mantle clock kit that had missing parts reconfigured and decorated with front and side pyrography panels showing damselflies, dragonflies, cattails and a flowing brook waterfall utilizing the natural wood grain of the face panel.
complete with glass door and a Westminster chime.
I couldn't think of a better theme for a time piece than dragonflies which represent change and transformation.
